Organization and Craftsmanship

Situation-1-
Professor Mandi brings out small wooden cubes. One of the students has to build a single base tower. Seems interesting? But no one is willing to make the tower. Why? Because he will have to bid for the process. Finally one of us showed the courage and got the contract to build the tower by paying 500 bucks. Everyone cheered him.
Result- He managed to build 16 brick long tower before quitting.
Situation-2-
The same task has to done. Now 8 students came to do it. But the twists are-
  •  Only one person can build the block. He will be blindfolded.
  • 1 person will instruct the builder.
  • Remaining people will be able to suggest the helper but not the builder.
Result- He managed to build only 7 bricks long tower before it fall down.

Conclusion-
The causes for failure in the 2nd case -

  • ·         The builder was blindfolded. In management terms the WORKER was unsure of his actions.
  • ·         The helper was passing his instruction and also listening to other members. So the MIDDLE MANAGEMENT was unsure of what instructions to give.
  • ·         The remaining people were helping them out by their individual suggestions. So there was no conscience in the HIGHER MANAGEMENT.

So there comes the need for a organization with proper management.

While discussing modern management we will also compare it with craftsmanship.

Craftsmanship-
Craftsmanship’s dictionary means says “skill in a particular craft.” The characteristics of craftsmanship are they are person centric and mostly they are done in small scale .So the work of artist, potter or cobbler are examples of craftsmanship and there is no requirement of management in these.

Management-
The need for modern management comes when the process happens in a large scale. The large process involves complexity which has to be managed by a hierarchy of people. The modern management procedure has different steps like planning, execution, validation and evaluation to improve productivity of any process.

Craftsmanship
Modern Management
Simple
Complex. Involves hierarchy.
A process on a whole
Breaks the whole process into small elements
Person Based
Process Based
Single work at a time
Parallel work simultaneously
Nil or Very Less intra dependency
More inter dependency
High Satisfaction
Low Satisfaction
High Skill
Less Skill. Deskilling leads to dexterity.
“Worker” concept.
“No-worker” concept.

3E’s of Management-

  1. Effectiveness-
  •      Depends on targets are achieved or not
  •     Performing effectively means that the right work is being completed
  •   Effectiveness is measured by setting out clear objectives before work starts and then evaluating whether the objectives have been met or not
      2.  Efficiency-

  •   Efficiency can be measured in terms of the inputs required to generate the outputs
  •    If the same work can be completed using less inputs or resources then efficiency has improved
  •     Measuring efficiency becomes the starting point or benchmark for measurement of future work
      3.  Excellence-
  •   Can be defined as more out of less for more
  • Creating strategic advantage through their ability to manage the performance network
      The relationship among this are-
Efficiency * Effectiveness = Excellence

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
